Scottish Adventures

Last weekend saw the team head to the ever popular Glentress 7 endurance MTB event just down the road from the lovely Scottish town of Peebles. Three teams of two took to the start in the form of Scot and Tomo, Phoebe and Nat and finally Johnny and Scotty. All the riders arrived with plenty of time to spare, then Magspeed HQ was set up for the day. The team went to sign on and collect numbers – everyone excited for the day of off=roading ahead. Then it was back to the vans, numbers on and time to get kitted up for the day’s adventures in the woods! A mass start at 10am which kicked the 7hr race off and it was a hard start…straight into a long fire road climb, following the lead car (which had a bag-piper in the back – making for an even more Scottish experience!) and the big group of riders soon split and Scotty and Tomo soon found themselves at the pointy end of the race – where they managed to stay for the next 7hrs. Scotty and Johnny opted for the two laps on then/two laps off strategy, whereas Scot and Tomo and also Pheobe and Nat went for the single lap on/off option. With rain forecast around midday, the lovely blue skies of the morning soon disappeared and nearly on on cue at noon, the rain started falling…and then didn’t stop, all day! Course conditions changed throughout the day – it took a while to get wet in the dense woodland, and the trails stayed dry for quite a while, but by the last few laps it had become a different ball game, with some very slippery roots making for some tough laps and a lot of concentration needed just as everyone was getting tired! A brilliant event and lots of fun had by all and our three entered teams all brought home some very decent results, the pairing of Scot and Tomo in 2nd, Johnny and Scotty in 3rd and Phoebe and Nat 4th in their respective category! A cracking day out had by all, finished off with tea in the Glentress Hotel and then camping at the site of the race, before the next day’s long drive home.

Johnny Dodgin had this to say about the epic weekend:

After some time out from racing I was excited to get back into competition and what better way to start than with the Glentress 7?! Leading up to the event I made sure I was race-fit and ready for a challenging day on the mountain bike; knowing that I was racing as part of a pair meant extra motivation as I didn’t want to slow up Scotty in the race for a high placing! This was one of the most enjoyable mountain bike races I’ve ever done, a great course with plenty of climbing and technical descents, slick event organisation, friendly marshals dotted around the course and a great bunch of fellow competitors made this a day to remember. A 3rd place finish and time on the podium with my fellow Magspeeders was the icing on the cake, I’ve got my MTB mojo back!

Phoebe and Nat had spent the week in Scotland bike-packing leading up to the Glentress 7 race and Phoebe has written a blog about their adventures, check it out, its a great read –

Scotland was a blast…pretty damn sure we’ll be back next year for more of the same…cannot wait!
