Last weekend saw a slightly smaller crew head ALL the way up north to the Scottish round of the British Cycling National Trophy Series at Irvine Beach. For many a different reason a good chunk of our National Series regulars could not make the race and only three riders took to the start line, Tomo on Saturday in the Veteran Men’s race and then Sam and Scotty in the Elite Men’s race on the Sunday afternoon.
A windy but dry day on the Saturday, things were going to be fast! Tomo went into the race with heavy legs after a hard week on the bike but nonetheless, gave it his all and mixed it with the big boys in the V40 race. After some really top results in the previous Trophy races, our man had a pretty good gridding and he hoped to gain from such a gridding. It wasn’t to be this time out and Tomo brought home 14th, still not too shabby though, in such a strong category!
Sunday saw the last three races of the weekend, Junior Men’s , Women’s and Elite Men’s races… Normally having a rider in each of the first two races, it was a weirdly quiet morning for the team. Scotty, Sam and Johnny (doing his best Sven Nys rider coach impression) all practiced on the course and got plenty of laps on the improved Irvine course, definitively another step on from last year, a really great set up! Just after finishing (dry) practice…the clouds decided to let go of what they were holding on to and it chucked it down!!Back to the vans to chill out and talk race, relax and get sorted before the 2.20 madness! The time came and the weather had held off and the circuit was now dry again, but the chilly sea breeze definitely made for some chilly legs for the final seconds before the start of the race, awaiting the whistle on the start line. Our boys both got pretty decent starts and hit the first sand section which caused somewhat of a bottleneck, but both got through pretty unscathed. Then a super fast race awaited the boys and they both held their own against the tough national level riders. Race long battles for both in what was a demanding course along with the competition and the strong sea winds making for some tough going along certain sections of the circuit. Back to the vans after the race, change, pack then the loooong road home!
Fun was had and once again Irvine put on a cracking event! Roll on next year…more of the same please!
